Free soroban mistake observation sheet for teachers (printable)
For teachers who want to turn "she keeps getting it wrong" into one thing to work on next lesson.
A wrong answer is a clue, not a diagnosis. The same wrong number can come from different hand movements, so the answer tells you where to look, and watching the child solve one similar problem slowly tells you what actually happened. This sheet lists the six things to observe, what each usually looks like in the answer, and a table to record one short code per mistake. Print it (A4 or US Letter) and keep it next to the class register. It is free and needs no sign-up.
How to use the sheet
- When a student gets a problem wrong, look at how far off the answer is and pick the most likely code from the table below.
- If you are not sure, ask the student to solve a similar problem slowly while you watch the hands. Write the code you see, not the one you guessed.
- Write the code in the student's row. After three lessons, the row shows what to start with next time.
What to observe
| Code | What to observe | What the answer often looks like | What to check while the child solves slowly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5-complements | Off by 2, 4, 6 or 8 on one rod | Which beads move when making or breaking 5, and in what order |
| 10 | 10-complements | Off by 10 plus a small amount | Whether the exchange for 10 is done on both rods |
| C | Carrying and borrowing | Off by exactly 10, 100 or 1,000 | Whether the neighbouring rod is adjusted every time |
| P | Place value | Right digits, wrong place | Which rod the first number is set on |
| R | Reading or typing the answer | Correct beads, wrong number written | Ask the child to read the beads aloud before writing |
| Z | Not cleared | First problem right, later ones off by the same amount | Whether the abacus is cleared before each new problem |
| ? | Uncertain | None of the above | Watch one full problem from start to finish |

Reading the table
- One code repeated in a row: a skill to revisit. Start the next lesson with three slow problems of that type.
- Many different codes in a row: often rushing or tiredness rather than a missing skill. Slow the problems down before teaching anything new.
- The same code across many rows: a whole-class topic. Teach it to everyone in the first five minutes.
- An empty row: homework you have not seen. That is worth a question too.
Frequently asked questions
Can the wrong answer tell me exactly what the child did?
No. Several different movements can produce the same wrong number. The answer narrows down where to look; watching the child solve a similar problem confirms it.
Is there a version that fills itself in?
Soroban Kingdom does a similar thing on screen for homework: from each wrong answer it works out the most likely wrong bead move, shows it to the child as a diagram, and keeps the type per student on the teacher screen. It is still a likely move worked out from the answer, so the same rule applies: use it to decide where to look. The teacher screen can be tried for 14 days without a credit card.
Can I copy and share the sheet?
Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own classes, and share the page link with other teachers.
You learn far faster by moving the beads than by reading. In Soroban Kingdom, levels 20โ16 are free forever with no sign-up, on any phone or computer.
