Soroban benefits: what the research actually says
Before you sign up, you want to know if it really works. Here is what the research can and cannot say.
Soroban training works, but the well-supported benefits are specific: faster, more accurate arithmetic and a much larger memory for numbers. A three-year randomised controlled trial of 183 children aged 5โ7 found that those taught mental abacus outperformed controls on arithmetic. Brain-imaging studies show experts calculate with visuospatial rather than language areas. Claims about IQ or "whole-brain development" go beyond the evidence.
What the studies found
- Arithmetic improves (randomised trial). Barner, Alvarez, Sullivan, Brooks, Srinivasan and Frank (Child Development, 2016) randomly assigned 183 children aged 5โ7 at a school in Vadodara, India, to mental abacus instruction or standard supplementary teaching for three years. The abacus group scored higher on arithmetic. Gains were largest for children with stronger spatial working memory; children with weak spatial working memory reached only basic ability.
- Experts use different brain areas (fMRI). Hanakawa and colleagues (NeuroImage, 2003) scanned abacus experts during mental calculation. They relied on bilateral frontal and parietal regions that handle visuospatial information, with little activity in the language areas that non-experts use. This is the physical evidence for "moving beads in the mind".
- Number memory roughly doubles. Hatano and Osawa (Cognition, 1983) tested grand experts in abacus-derived mental calculation. Their digit span was about twice that of ordinary adults, but their memory for letters was normal. The gain is specific to numbers held as bead images.
- Review of the field. A 2020 review in Frontiers in Neuroscience (Wang) concluded that abacus training can improve calculation, working memory and executive function, and is associated with changes in frontal-parietal and occipital-temporal networks.
What the evidence does not support
- Higher IQ or better grades across all subjects. Effects are clear for arithmetic and number memory; transfer to reading or science is weakly supported at best.
- "Right-brain development". Imaging shows both hemispheres, mainly parietal and frontal areas. The right-brain story is a simplification.
- Quick results. The randomised trial ran for three years. A child who stops before the mental bead image forms keeps little of the speed.
What parents and teachers see
Three changes come up again and again in classrooms. Arithmetic homework takes less time. Children stop being afraid of big numbers. And the length of time a child can sit and concentrate grows from five or ten minutes to twenty or thirty. The third is the least studied but the most consistently reported.
The conditions for the benefit to appear
The benefit arrives once the mental bead image exists. With one weekly lesson and nothing at home that takes one to two years; with ten minutes of daily practice at home it takes six months to a year. In the trial, the group that gained was the group that kept going for three years. Two things keep children going: mistakes that are visible and fixable without a parent teaching, and levels fine enough that progress shows every few weeks. Tools that point to the bead move that most likely went wrong, such as Soroban Kingdom, exist for exactly that reason.
The conditions of good soroban learning are fine steps, visible mistakes and short daily practice. The research benefits sit behind those three.
Frequently asked questions
How many years before the benefit shows?
Parents notice faster arithmetic within six months to a year. Mental abacus takes one to two years. The randomised trial measured its effect after three years.
Is it still worth it when calculators exist?
Not for speed alone. What remains is the ability to hold numbers as shapes and the absence of fear of numbers. Most early arithmetic problems begin with getting stuck on calculation, and soroban removes that block.
Does it help children who struggle with maths?
Yes, but more slowly. In the trial, children with weaker spatial working memory progressed less. Fine-grained levels and attention to the type of mistake let them reach basic mental abacus, just over a longer period.
You learn far faster by moving the beads than by reading. In Soroban Kingdom, levels 20โ16 are free forever with no sign-up, on any phone or computer.
